Colourful cat and dolphin sleeve tattoo

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A woman in a pastel rainbow dress shows a full colour sleeve tattoo running from the upper arm to the forearm. The design includes a cat with a pink face and blue eyes, dolphins among waves, hearts, a star and a small script line on the shoulder and upper chest. The bright shades of pink, blue, yellow and green are shaded softly against a plain grey backdrop.

Nobody on Scarrow Island agreed on whose cat Biscuit was, but everyone agreed she was the only one who could tell when the dolphins were coming in. She would sit on the harbour wall with her ears flat and her blue eyes fixed on the water, and an hour later the bay would fill with grey backs and bright fins, rolling through the shallows as if they were late for something.

Mrs Oakenfold at the post office swore the cat was only after the herring. Eilidh Strang, who mended nets three doors down, thought otherwise. In March she had found a bottle washed up below the slip, its cork sealed with red wax, and inside was a note written in looping script on the back of an old pink ferry ticket. It said only: the tide has forgotten the way home. Bring the cat.

So on the morning of the spring tide Eilidh carried Biscuit down to the stones in a fishing creel lined with an old jumper. The cat did not object. She stood up on the wet slip with the sky streaked pink and yellow above the sound, and called once, a noise like a kettle starting to sing. The water heaved. Three dolphins surfaced, then a fourth, and between them rose a current of colour: crests tinted blue and green, a heart of foam that held its shape, a star of light that stayed still while everything else moved.

They did not need a boat. Biscuit slipped off the edge without a splash and the dolphins turned to meet her. Eilidh waited on the harbour wall until the water lay flat again, and only then did she notice the ticket had come back to her pocket, folded into the shape of a fish, with one word written on it in the same looping hand: thanks.
