Geometric sleeve tattoos on both arms
Geometric · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The image shows extended arms and part of the upper back on a plain black background, covered in interlocking geometric star and polygon patterns. Large flower-like motifs sit near the shoulders and upper arms, and the pattern is built from fine dotted and lined grey shading. Red ink fills the gaps between the grey shapes, and the arms are shown without a visible face or torso.

Brother Osric had been told the star would close on its own if the lines were true. For eleven winters he had drawn the same figure on the chapter house floor in chalk, ten points, then twelve, then the interlaced lattice the old masons called the rope of God, and each winter the lines wandered by the width of a barley grain before they reached the far side. The prior said this was pride. Osric suspected it was the pigment, which was too thin.

In March the infirmarian brought him a jar of madder root boiled down to a paste, dark as a cut vein, and showed him how it bled into the grey ash he used for shading. Where the lines crossed, the red pooled and held. Where they did not, it ran. Osric spent the Lenten nights with a bone stylus, stippling dots so small they could be counted only by candle, until the grey shapes stood apart like stones in a stream and the red filled the channels between them.
On the eve of Easter the star closed for the first time. He saw it from the cloister doorway: twelve points, each one meeting its neighbour exactly, the red threading through the whole design like water finding its bed. He wanted to call the brothers. Instead he took the stylus and, at the one point where the lines still refused to meet, pressed a small hole through the plaster and left the red unsealed.
Brother Matthias found him there at dawn, on his knees, rubbing ash from his fingers. "You've left it open," Matthias said. Osric nodded and kept working. "A closed thing is finished," he said, "and I haven't finished looking at it yet."
