Colourful geometric triangle tattoo in a mosaic of red, orange, pink, blue and green across the inner forearm.

Colourful geometric triangles on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm carries a cluster of overlapping geometric triangles in a broad range of bright colours, including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink. The shapes are solid filled facets with no outlines, arranged in a vertical column that narrows towards the wrist and fragments into loose triangles at the edges. The background is a plain grey wall and a knitted jumper sleeve, which keeps attention on the colour work.

The gulls had been stealing the wool again when Morag came down to the harbour wall with the last of the dyed skeins. Her grandmother had always said the island had no colour of its own, only what the boats brought in and what the women made of it, so Morag had spent the winter boiling madder roots, lichen and the blue bark of the alder until the kitchen smelled like a tannery.

She knitted the sea a jumper that spring, all panels and no seams, because her grandmother had told her the sea would not take a garment that had a way out. Each panel was a triangle, a sail cut from wind, and she set each one beside the last until the front was a patchwork of red and orange and green that the fishermen laughed at. The old man at the pier said it would frighten the mackerel. Morag said the mackerel had never once looked up.

On the night the storm came from the west, the boats were out and the lamp on the point would not stay lit. Morag climbed the cliff with the jumper over her arm and held it up to the wind. The panels cracked free, one after another, and went out over the water as loose colour, turning and folding until the dark had a hundred small bright edges in it. The boats saw them and steered home by them. In the morning the jumper was gone, and the island had a new habit of looking out to sea before it went to bed.
