Rainbow geometric triangles on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a layered, three-dimensional geometric design of stepped triangles and prism-like shapes that fan out from a central point. Each facet is filled with flat, solid colour in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink, separated by heavy black outlines, with a small black and white triangle at the centre. The design wraps around the upper arm and sits against weathered wooden boards, with a partial grey tattoo visible at the top edge.

Dear Nell, Mrs Pardoe has given me the back attic with the sloping ceiling and a window that looks straight at the harbour wall. Forgive the smudge on this paper. I have been polishing the brass in the dining room since six, because the lens in the Carrick Point light came down on Tuesday and the council wants it back in its housing before the spring tide.

It is a Fresnel lens, stepped like a wedding cake turned inside out, every ring cut into rows of prisms. When the afternoon sun comes through the bay window, it throws colour across the wallpaper: red first, then orange, yellow, green, blue, violet. Mrs Pardoe says it is bad luck to sweep the light off the floor. I told her it is the most honest thing in the house.

The keeper's grandson came yesterday with a bag of wet sand and a torn photograph of his grandfather standing beside the lamp. He wanted to know if the colours were the same ones the ships saw. I said the ships saw white, and the glass only split it so we could tell the parts apart. He thought about that for a long while, then asked me to show him how to find the small black and white prism at the heart of the lens, where everything meets.

I found it this morning, sitting in the dark with my back to the window, and held it up to the light. For a moment the whole room was painted, every stripe of it, pointing back at that one still point. I am staying until the ring is set. Write soon, and tell me whether the kettle at home still rattles. Love, Margaret.
