Fine line geometric wireframe sphere with a blended pink, purple and teal circle behind it, tattooed on the inner forearm.

Geometric wireframe sphere on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A black fine line wireframe polyhedron sits over a filled circle that fades from pink through purple to teal. Small dots trace a curved arc around the outside of the shape. The tattoo is centred on a pale forearm against a plain light background, with a black lace sleeve visible at the left edge.

You key the lattice onto the survey feed a little after the second watch, while the relay at Tessaly Reach still has enough power to hold a signal. Twenty faces, thirty edges, every line a lane the drones have agreed to fly. The world beneath it is Orrin's Eye, a dead ball of ice that the atmosphere painted pink and violet the year the thaw failed, and the colours have been sliding toward teal ever since.

Mara Okonkwo-Hale, who taught you the lattice, used to say a sphere was just a cage that had learned to hold its breath. She fed you the old survey notes on night shifts, one sentence at a time, while the coolant ticked in the pipes. Her last handover left you a single instruction: when the dotted arc on the plot begins to blink, don't correct it. Let the drones fall into the gap and log what they find there.

The arc blinks on the third watch. You leave it alone. Forty-one drones slip through the dotted line in a neat procession, each one stamping its position into the grid, and where the arc bends they find the old relay stations she mentioned, still lit, still transmitting their call signs across the ice. You read the names aloud to the empty room, one after another, until the last of them comes back green.
