Rain has been coming sideways across the market since Tuesday, and the tarpaulin over my watch tray has sprung two leaks, so the brass cases are all faintly spotted. I'm writing this under the awning with the lantern lit, because something odd happened and you're the only one who won't laugh.

A young man came to the stall this morning with a dented pocket watch wrapped in a bus ticket. He turned it over in his palm and said, to nobody in particular, that it was wibbly wobbly, timey wimey. I asked him what on earth he meant. He just smiled and said the thing had run eleven minutes slow yesterday and would be exactly right within the hour. Then he tapped the glass, and it was ten past nine again, the same as when he'd walked up.

I took three pounds for it, which was robbery on his part, and he left whistling. Then I opened the back and found an inscription in my own handwriting: Sell this to the man in the blue coat on Thursday. Do not argue with him. I have no memory of writing it. I'm going to put the kettle on and wait for Thursday, and if he comes I'll be ready with my best argument.
