Mountain tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot and ankle show a small mountain range tattoo in dark blue-black ink, with peaks drawn in simple linework and partly filled. The tattoo sits on the side of the ankle, with a woven anklet above it and dark leggings cropped above the ankle. Dry autumn leaves cover a wooden deck, with a brick wall and a glass door behind.

You'll want to know the Pike is still standing. Mam's old map is pinned behind the bar where the damp hasn't got to it yet.

Tom from the post office came in Tuesday asking whether I'd still sell the cottage. I told him the cottage was never mine to sell, it's yours and mine together, and he looked at me as though I'd said something about the weather. The valley has gone quiet. Three walkers last week wanted the old route over the ridge, and none of them could read the contour lines the way Dad could.
I found your drawing in the drawer under the till. Those three peaks you sketched on a beer mat at seventeen, the one with the dip on the right where you slipped on the scree and swore for an hour. I've kept it flat under a jar of buttons. The ink has gone grey at the edges, but the shape holds.
Come up before the first frost. Bring the boots, not the good ones. I'll have the stove lit and the kettle on, and we can walk to the dip together and see whether the hill is still where we left it.
