Colourful mandala tattoo on a hip
Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo
Two photographs show a large circular mandala tattoo on the side of a person's hip and buttock, with the body cropped out of frame. The design is built from layered geometric petals and a central flower in dark navy, teal, magenta, purple and yellow, with smooth shading that gives each petal depth. The left image is a close, straight-on view, and the right image is taken from the side, showing the tattoo at a smaller scale against a pale wall.

The fourth night the rain came sideways across the showfield, and Ada Pell still had not finished the lens. She sat on an upturned crate at the back of the caravan with a tin of coloured glass open on her knee, sorting the chips the way her father had taught her: navy, teal, the plum that looked almost black under a paraffin lamp, and the sulphur yellow she saved for the centre.

The Kaleidoscope Tent had stood at the far end of the midway since April. For a penny a look, people pressed their eyes to a brass tube her father had built from an old ship's chronometer case and three shards of cathedral glass, and the world broke open into flowers. Each evening Ada watched their faces soften with the same quiet surprise, as if something had been folded back into place for them. Nobody ever asked how the petals were made, and she never told them the pattern came from a rose window her mother had sketched on the back of a bill.
A soaked boy ducked under the flap just before the lamps were doused and asked, very seriously, whether the middle ever stayed still. Ada had never thought about it. She pressed the last magenta chip into the ring of petals, set the yellow over it, and rolled the lens into the tube. When she lifted it to her own eye the rings turned slowly, the way the wheel turned on the dark fair beyond the canvas, and for the first time the centre held.
