The first guest of the new year came up the valley road on foot, carrying nothing but a carpetbag and a tin of pink paint. Mam said we had no room, which was true, but the snow was coming off the tops in grey sheets and the lamp in the taproom was the only light for three miles. So I gave him the room over the stables, where the old dye vats still stood under their sacking.

He spent the whole of the first night at the wooden table by the window, drawing. In the morning the floor was covered in sheets of paper, each one a flower or a curl of vine, and every flower had a dot at its heart that he had gone over so many times the paper had torn. He wouldn't tell me what they were for. He only said that the valley had been all colour when his grandmother was young, before the mill closed and the dyes went cold, and that he was trying to remember the exact shade of the peony on the Abbey gate.

On the sixth morning the snow stopped and the sun came up hard over the ridge, and every window in the valley flashed. He was gone before breakfast. In the room over the stables I found a single sheet left flat under the pitcher, a ring of teal and rose and orange around a pink centre, and beside it a note in a careful hand asking me to keep the vats filled. I did. The snow has not come back since, and in the hard light off the white fields I swear the bed of the old dye vats has begun to bloom.
