Colourful phoenix and feathers on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A multicoloured phoenix with outstretched wings and long trailing tail feathers rises from a sweep of peacock-style feathers that curl across the thigh. The bold outlines and vivid blue, green, orange, pink and purple fills give the design a strong, graphic look. The tattoo fills most of the frame against warm skin, with a pink lace garment visible at the top edge.

You find the peacock feathers first, a bundle of them pushed behind the bread bin in the kitchen at Gull Rest, the boarding house on Saltcombe front where the sign in the hall says guests are asked not to touch what is not theirs. Mrs Ruddock catches you holding them up to the window. Her mouth tightens, then loosens, and she says the last lodger left them in March along with an unpaid week and a sketchbook full of birds.

The season ends that Friday. Every room empties except yours, the one at the top of the stairs, where the wind off the bay rattles the sash all night and the gulls argue on the chimney pots. You spend the afternoons on the sea wall with the sketchbook, turning past herons and wrens until you reach a page where a bird rises out of a fan of feathers, wings open, tail streaming like something poured. Under it, in pencil, someone has written: it comes back from its own tail.
Mrs Ruddock's husband, she tells you over tea, used to say that a phoenix is only a peacock that has finally stopped apologising for being too much. He laughed at his own joke, she says, and then he went out in a boat one October and did not come back, and she kept the room as it was because nobody asked her to change it. Her hands are steady on the cup. Yours are not.
On the last morning you carry the feathers down to the shingle at low tide and lay them out in the wet, blue and green and orange against the grey stones. The sea comes in slowly, the way it does, and takes them one by one. When you climb back up to the front, the step of Gull Rest has one long orange quill stuck to it, still warm from the sun, and the door is already open.
