The caller at Hallow Mere had a voice that could pull a sleeper out of a pew. Every Saturday he stood on a chair at the north end of the dance hall and sang out the figures, and every Saturday the old floorboards answered him.

One winter the hall stood empty for a month after the roof leaked into the fiddler's case. Nobody came. Ada Brunt, who kept the lamps, swept the boards alone and heard, in the dark between the rafters, a tune played slightly flat. She lit the last lamp and found the fiddler's chair occupied by a thin grey shape, its bow hand curled, waiting for someone to call the set.

Ada had no voice for calling. She climbed onto the chair anyway, cupped her hands and sang out the only words she knew from her grandmother's stories: come forth, come forth, and bring your feet. The shape rose. Down the stairs came the village dead, one by one, in their Sunday boots, and they formed their sets across the floor with the tidy courtesy of people who had been waiting to be asked.

They danced until the lamps guttered. At dawn they filed back into the rafters, and Ada found the fiddle strung with fresh wire and a penny left on each chair. She kept the hall open every Saturday after that, and she never once called the dance without first leaving the north door unbarred.
