You'll want to know about the chapel. Reverend Bell preached on the letter to the Hebrews and read out that bit about being sure of things hoped for and not seen, and Mrs Garrow stood up at the back and said that's all very well for men who've never breathed coal dust. Nobody laughed. Then she sat down and sang the first hymn louder than anyone, so I think she's still on our side, only angry with the Almighty.
I walked down to the top of the drift on Tuesday and stood by the winding wheel with the other wives, who have made the place into a sort of vigil without anyone deciding it. Nobody says much. We stand in our shawls with the smoke from the stack going flat across the fields, and every so often someone says the name of a man below as if it were a question. Your letter came Monday with the Canadian stamp and I read it twice on the step. You say the trees out there are so tall you can't see the tops of them for mist. I'd like to see that. I've propped it on the mantel beside the clock, folded so the stamp shows, and when the cage finally comes up I'll tell you myself, in ink, what it was like to watch it rise.
