Dear Tom, the big wheel stuck at Maidstone again, so we sat in the top carriage for two hours eating Mrs Dunning's pies while Dad swore at the generator. You'll say I'm making it up, but the fair has a new painter. He's called Aldous Pike, a thin man with ink under his nails, and he signs every board with a little hook under the P.

He spent three days on the back of the cake walk stall, lettering in a hand so fine it looked more like thread than paint. Mum asked him what it said and he wouldn't tell her until it was dry. Love never fails, in letters no taller than my little finger, running right across the boards where the punters can't help but read it while they wait for a tin to be knocked over. I asked why he'd bothered with something so small, and he said an old woman had paid him in advance to do it, and she'd asked for it to be there when she came back in September.

She never came back. We've been to four towns since and nobody on the lot knows her, though Dad says a woman in a green coat was watching the painting go up and didn't blink once. The fair folded at Ashford on Sunday and the lorries left in the rain. I stayed behind to help strike the tent, and when I looked back the boards were already soaked through, the sawdust gone to mud, but those few words were still there, dark and neat.

I'm writing this at the kitchen table in Ashford with the kettle going cold, because I wanted you to know the stall is still standing. Nobody's come to take it down. The rain hasn't shifted it. Come home when your ship docks, and I'll show you.
