Comic book sleeve on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The collage shows a full arm sleeve made of comic book panels, including a Batman figure, a grinning villain, a woman with glasses and red lips, and bold sound effects such as HA HA and BAM. The linework is heavy and outlined, with flat colour in yellow, red and orange and areas of black and grey shading. Each photo is a close crop of a different section of the arm, with the sleeve filling most of each frame.

Dilys Perrow had worked the Dover booth for nineteen years and had never once been handed a box of comics at four in the morning. The courier, a thin man called Stanley Obi, kept his palms flat on the counter as though the stack might get up and leave. The top issue showed a grinning clown in a purple waistcoat, mouth stretched wide, HA HA HA hammered across the page in letters bigger than the buildings beneath them.

She turned the pages with a gloved finger. A caped figure dropped from a gargoyle in ink so black it looked wet, and a woman in heavy spectacles leaned over a control panel marked in yellow. Somewhere a shout broke into a burst of orange and red: BAM. Dilys had logged cigarettes, cloned phones and once a tortoise in a hatbox. Nothing had ever made her want to smile over the paperwork.
"Who's the one with the glasses?" she asked.
"Nell Varga," Stanley said. "She's the only one who ever worked out the clown's pattern. Every laugh is a clue. He's been stealing the same cathedral for forty years, and she keeps drawing the map." He swallowed. "The crate's got the map in it."
Dilys ticked the box marked goods for resale, then wrote in the margin: one city's worth of laughing, value unknown. Under the lamp she pressed the stamp down, CLEARED in red, and the clown's grin seemed to hold the light a moment longer than the rest of the page. She waved Stanley through, then sat listening to the lorries idle, wondering who in a city of stone would bother keeping a map of a joke.
