Teacup, lantern and profile linework on an arm
Other · Black and grey · Photo
The collage shows four close views of black outline tattoos on a limb, including a teacup, a lantern, an ornate beaded mask and a woman's profile with long lashes framed by beads and roses. The lines are clean and uniform with scrollwork and leaf details, and no shading or fill is visible, so the work may be at an early or linework-only stage. The image is entirely black ink on skin, and the four panels are arranged in a grid with the tattoo filling most of each frame.

The last northbound had gone without Nell Garside, and the stationmaster was already walking the platform with his lamp, snuffing the others one by one. She sat on the bench outside the refreshment room with a cup of tea gone cold between her gloves and a silver mask folded in her lap. It had come by post from a Mrs Ardell in Harrogate, wrapped in tissue, with a note asking her to return it to the dance hall at Thornbury by Saturday. Nell had not yet decided whether she would.

Inside, the urn hissed. Ada, who ran the buffet and had worked that counter since the war, set a second cup beside her without asking. 'You'll not find a porter to walk you home before the milk train,' she said. 'Drink that.' Nell lifted the cup. The rim had a chip shaped like a crescent moon, and she remembered the night the mask had been bought, when a man in a hired dinner jacket had pressed a rose into her hand and said she was the only lady in the room who did not hide behind her face.
Ada sat down heavily on the bench and smoothed her apron. 'Mrs Ardell was my sister,' she said. 'She never went back to dancing after Walter died. She wanted you to have it, not to give it back.' Nell turned the mask over. Someone had threaded a new ribbon through the beads, pale blue, and tied it with a careful bow. Above them the lantern swung in the draught from the platform, throwing its pattern of leaves across the flagstones.
She lifted the mask and held it to her face, the cool metal edge settling over her brow. Far down the line a whistle sounded, thin and uncertain. Nell stood up, tucked the ribbon under her collar, and walked towards the ticket window without looking at the timetable.
