The frost has got into the pump again, so I am washing at the kitchen range like Mam used to, with the kettle steaming and the window gone white at the corners. Dad says the Ashby lot will not bring the heifers down till March, and Tom has taken the cart to Thornbury for coal, leaving me the milking, the hens and a great deal of silence.

I have been thinking about what you wrote about the dance hall in Bristol, the girls with their hair cut short to the jaw and their bands tied with ribbon so the sweat does not run into their eyes. You said the rouge was the only honest thing in that place. I laughed, though I did not find it funny. On Sunday I went through Mam's sewing box and found the red wool she kept for darning socks, and I have been pressing a strip of it flat inside the book you gave me, the one with the marbled cover. It is not much of a headband. It will do for Saturdays.

Dad came in while I was at it and said nothing for a long time, then asked whether the hens were laying yet. I said no. He said they would when the light came back, and went out again. I think he means you should come home for the lambing, but he will not say it, so I am saying it for him.

Write when you can. Tell me the new tune they play in that hall, and whether the singer with the blue feather still does the slow one. I will be on the back step at dusk, watching for the post cart and telling myself it is only the wind.
