Compass and anchor tattoos on ankles

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two feet in yellow-trimmed flats stand on a textured carpet, viewed from above. A small compass rose sits on the outer side of the left ankle and a small anchor sits on the outer side of the right ankle. Both designs are drawn in thin black linework with light shading, and the image is in natural colour with the tattoos shown in black ink against pale skin.

The harbour lights of Tessaly Deep had been dimmed for the night shift, so Mirela counted the moored skiffs by touch along the rail. Her brother Dov was already aboard the tender, bent over the chart table, swearing softly at the cracked glass that covered the old paper. Nobody on the station trusted the satellites any more. They trusted the needle and the wind and the small brass rose bolted above the wheel, which had belonged to their grandmother and which pointed, she insisted, to home even when home had drifted three hundred kilometres astern.

They cast off before the tide turned. Dov steered by the rose while Mirela sat on the transom with her feet bare on the warm deck, the anchor chain coiled beside her like a sleeping animal. Out past the breakwater the water went from green to black, and the drones that mapped the reef blinked red on the horizon like cigarette ends. Dov wanted to run for the open lanes. Mirela wanted to find the reef their grandmother had sketched on the back of a ration card, the one with the drowned lighthouse marked in pencil.

They found it at dawn, where the swell broke white over a ring of stone. Mirela dropped the anchor without a word and it bit clean, the chain singing as it tightened. Dov looked at the water, then at her, then at the brass rose swinging gently above them. He said nothing. He did not need to. The needle had pointed true all along, and the sea had simply been waiting for someone patient enough to hold still and let the ship come round.
