The swallows went on Tuesday, all at once, the way they do when the weather turns and nobody sees them decide. Dad stood at the yard gate with his tea going cold and said they'd be back by April if the Lord and the wind allowed, which is what he says about everything now. I counted four from the hayloft before they cleared the top field. Four, and the last one always lagging, as if it had forgotten something on the windowsill.

The lambing shed is full again. Mrs Pryce's boy came up in the Land Rover on Saturday to help with the ewes that were struggling, and he's got your old knack with a bottle. I didn't tell him that. He'd only have gone red and asked for the next one.

I've put the ledger from your room in the tack box, under the saddle blanket where the mice don't get. Nothing in it that matters except the page where you wrote down every bird you saw the summer you were nine. Forty-one kinds. You were so proud of the kestrel.

Come at Easter if you can. The swallows will be back on the wire by then, and I'll have the kettle on before you reach the gate.
