Small icons on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Six small icons are arranged down the inner forearm: an outlined triangle, a solid black heart, a peace sign, an outlined coat hanger, a solid black aeroplane and an outlined origami crane. The outlines are thin and the heart and aeroplane are filled in solid black, with no shading. The pale skin and soft beige blanket behind the arm keep the composition simple and evenly lit.

Nobody comes to Lost Property at Carrow Airport asking for a heart, but they all ask for something like one. My domain is a cupboard behind the baggage belt, and by Thursday it holds forty-one umbrellas, two cricket bats and a prosthetic leg whose owner, a retired cellist, swore he would be back for it. I log everything on a clipboard in biro, because the computer only accepts what can be weighed.

The man with the coat hanger came in on a wet Tuesday in March. He had left a wooden hanger behind at security, the old kind with a notch at the neck, and he wanted it more than his scarf. "It was my father's," he said, and I didn't ask anything else, because people tell you enough without being asked. I found it under a bench at gate nine, wrapped in a carrier bag. While I filled in the form he folded a paper crane from his boarding pass, quick and careful, and set it on the counter between us like a receipt.
He was gone before I could tell him the crane was too good to leave with a stranger. Instead I took the aeroplane sticker off the depot van's back window, the one that always rattles on the motorway, and I stuck it to my log beside the day's date. Then I put the crane on the shelf above the kettle, where the umbrellas can't reach it, and waited for the next Tuesday.
