Matching lotus tattoos on two feet

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two feet are shown side by side against a dark background, each with a small lotus flower outline on the upper foot. The lotus has a few open petals and a single curving stem, drawn in thin, even black linework with no shading. The ink is black, and the composition is centred on the two matching designs.

You learned the moat was dry the summer the Hallorans stopped paying for its upkeep, and you learned about the lotus the morning you found it open in the cracked clay below the drawbridge, a single pale cup on a stem bent like a question. Nobody had planted it. The old countess's letters mentioned a bowl of seeds she had carried home from Kyoto, and the steward swore she had flung them into the water out of spite before she died.

Every evening you carry a bucket down the rope ladder from the scullery, because the stem is thin, the clay is thinner, and the castle is thinnest of all. Mrs Fenwick from the village asks why you bother with a weed in a dead house. You say nothing. You know there is a second one, a seedling the steward's boy pulled from the same bowl and hid in the chapel font. Every Sunday the vicar pours it out with the holy water, and every Monday you find it again, stubbornly green.

The autumn rains come hard. The moat fills to the drawbridge in a single night, brown and quick. You stand on the broken parapet with a lantern and watch the lotus lift and spread across the new water, its stem lengthening until the petals lie flat on the surface. Somewhere below, the chapel drain has overflowed too, and both channels meet beneath the old wall, where the stone was always cracked.

In the morning the lotus is gone from the clay and floating in the moat, and you cannot tell which of the two waters it chose. You take the skiff that has no oars and drag it across the surface by hand, and you find you do not mind getting wet.
