Compass and cracked clock sleeve on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A realistic sleeve tattoo wraps the forearm and elbow, with a compass rose at the top and a large clock face with Roman numerals and an ornate key at the bottom. Soft grey shading and fine detail give the clock and cracked surface a three-dimensional look. Warm brown and tan tones appear in the ornamental areas and compass, and the design fills most of the frame.

Mags Harrow had kept the gate at Caddon Keep for thirty winters, and in all that time nobody had asked her why the great clock in the south tower had stopped at ten to four. She knew. Her mother had told her the lord's wife wound it every Sunday until the flood came up the valley and cracked the tower's east face like a dropped plate. After that the hands stayed where the water left them.

The key came up in spring, when the bailey drain was cleared. Mags found it wedged in the silt beside the old compass stone, its bow worked with leaves and a little crown, its teeth still bright. She carried it up the spiral stair with the wind pulling at her apron and set it in the lock of the tower door, which had been rusted shut since before her birth. It turned as though it had been waiting.

Inside, the clock face had split in a web of fine lines, and the Roman numerals stood out grey and patient under the dust. Someone had scratched a compass rose into the wall beside it, pointing north toward the sea road the lord's men had taken and never come back from. Mags wound the key once. The gears gave a dry, grudging click.

She did not wait to see the hands move. She went down to the gate, unbarred it, and let the carters in with their hay, and by evening the whole valley knew the keep had started again. Some folk said the tide would come back for that. Mags said only that ten to four had been a long time coming, and that she was content to let the hour find its own way.
