Realism leg sleeve with portraits and wildlife
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
The sleeve shows a man in a feathered headdress and a woman with a beaded headdress and painted face, set above a howling wolf, a galloping horse, an eagle in flight and a dreamcatcher. The work uses fine realistic shading with smooth tonal gradients in black and grey, with warm red and brown washes near the horse and wolf. The four photographs show the leg from front, side and back, with the design wrapping around the limb and filling the frame against a salon background.

Mr Coyle brought the negative in a flour sack, wrapped in last week's Ardith Courier, and he wanted it finished before the Saturday dance. Forty years of cellar damp had bloomed across the emulsion like breath on a window. I held it to the lamp and found a man I half knew from the feed store, jaw set hard, looking past the lens at something that wasn't there yet.

My job was the small mercy of retouching: pencil on the grain, a little ink on the collar, grey laid over the blotches until the face came back. I worked through the Thursday with the door propped open for air. Around midnight a wolf started up in the hills behind the water tower, one long note that climbed and broke and climbed again, and the dog under the counter stopped pretending to sleep.
Coyle came back Friday and stood over the bench while I dabbed the last shadow under the cheekbone. He asked me to put the wolf in the background, the way his father always swore he could hear it on still nights. I told him the camera never caught sound. He said the old man had told him that too, and it hadn't stopped him.
I took the fine brush, dipped it in the red-brown wash I kept for sunsets, and laid a thin band along the horizon behind the portrait. Under the grey it looked like dust going up off a road at evening, or a horse running hard for the hills. Coyle studied it a long while, then paid in exact change, and I kept the lamp on until the dog finally slept.
