Compass and feather on the chest
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A round compass with a feather hanging from a loop at the top, set within a beaded dotted border with small droplets below. The compass face and rim are shaded in soft greys with fine linework, and there is a faint partial tattoo at the left edge of the frame. The tattoo sits centrally on a bare torso against a patterned grey top, with the photo taken at close range.

Dear Tomas, the pass is closed again. Three mules went over the north ridge on Tuesday and only two came back down, and the Guild has sent a man from the capital to measure the snowline, which means he will measure it wrong. I am writing because you asked me to keep the old compass sheet for you, the brass one with the goose quill tied to its loop, and I found it this morning under the spare oilcloth where you left it. The needle still swings. It has never once pointed where the chart says it should, and you always said that was the point of it.

I took it up to the hut at the saddle to test it against the cairn. The wind was coming off the glacier in long grey sheets, the sort that makes the beads of the rim rattle against your teeth if you hold it too close. I stood there a long time. The needle wandered east, then north, then settled on nothing at all, shivering like a dog that has heard its name. Old Hesper from the inn says that is how you know the mountain is listening. I think it is only iron and cold, but I did not say so, because she brought me soup and I was grateful.
The drop of silver that hangs beneath the rim has been moving all week. I thought it was the damp working into the solder, but this afternoon it had gathered itself into a bead the size of a lentil and I watched it fall onto the sheet. It left a small dark mark over the word for return. I have decided not to rub it out.
Come down when the pass opens. Bring the proper survey, not the one the Guild paid for. I will keep the lamp lit at the hut, and the compass pointing wherever you tell it to.
