Compass and pocket watch on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A compass and a pocket watch are stacked vertically, linked by chains and wrapped in ornate scrollwork that curls up the forearm. The linework is detailed and the compass rose and watch face are shaded with smooth grey gradients to give depth. The image is a close, straight-on photo of the forearm against a plain indoor background, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The clock in the hall stopped again on Tuesday, the one your father wound every Sunday for forty years, and I have not had the heart to fix it. Mr Pell from the mill says the mainspring has gone soft. I told him to leave it be until you came home and could argue with him yourself.

The forest has come right up to the back gate this month. Ash and beech, and something new at the edge of the lane that the men call the grey wood, where the paths bend in ways the surveyors' chains do not follow. Your compass is still on the dresser where you left it. I open the lid most evenings. The needle still swings north, though I cannot think what north is for out here, when everything I need lies within a mile of the church.

Yesterday the boy from the lodge came running with a pocket watch he had dug from under the roots of a fallen oak. Its chain was rusted to a knot, and the hands stood at ten to four, the Roman numerals worn almost smooth. I asked him where he found it and he said, very seriously, that the wood had given it back. I told him to take it to the watchmaker in town. I did not tell him I was half hoping the thing had been yours.

Come home by the lower road, not the forest path. And bring the compass so I can see which way I am facing when I wave.

Yours, Ellen
