Compass and world map on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A detailed compass sits at the centre of the composition, with a bevelled rim, a compass rose and a needle rendered in fine shading. Behind it, a faded map with latitude and longitude lines and landmass outlines fills the surrounding skin in soft grey wash. The compass face has a warm reddish-brown tone, while the map and background stay in greys and blacks.

The sea captain's compass came to the scriptorium at Saint Elwin's in the wet week after Candlemas, wrapped in sailcloth that smelled of tar and oranges. Prior Hollis said we could keep it on one condition: that I copy the chart it had come folded inside, a sheet of vellum gone grey at the creases, its coastlines crowded with place names in three different hands. My hand was steady and my Latin was not, so the chart fell to me.

The brass case had a rim worn smooth by thumbs and a rose painted at its heart, faded to the colour of a wet brick. The cardinal points were picked out in letters no bigger than barleycorns. For a fortnight I did nothing but look at it. The needle shivered and settled, shivered and settled, and when I tilted the box toward the window it swung back north with a patience that made me feel I was the one being corrected.

On the feast of Saint Brendan I was inking the far shore, a headland shaped like a closed fist, when I noticed the needle had stopped swinging. I tapped the glass. It did not move. I drew the harbour in fine lines, then the road that ran inland through the hills, and the needle drifted round until it pointed at the open door of the scriptorium, where the wind carried in the smell of rain and the bells of the lower town.

Prior Hollis came up the stairs at Vespers and found me with the pen still wet. He read the sheet over my shoulder and said nothing for a long while. Then he asked whether the captain had ever come back for his compass. I told him no. He nodded, lifted the box from the desk and set it in my palm. Keep it, he said. The captain has no further use for north.
