Fine line arrow tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A slim black arrow runs up the forearm, with a small open arrowhead at the top and three chevron feathers at the base. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the photograph is in black and white. The wrist is raised beside the chin, and the frame cuts off the face, leaving the tattoo as the clear focal point.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Queen of Ashvale sent her rider on the third day of thaw, and he wanted forty shafts by Michaelmas, each one trued on the flat stone at Greywater where the river bends. I told him the water was still too cold for the glue. He said the Queen had not asked about glue.

I had a single ash stave I had kept back for eleven winters, pale as bone and straight as a grudge. I split it, scraped it, and cut the nock with my grandmother's knife. The feathers were goose from the marsh below the mill, three to a shaft, laid in a chevron so the wind would turn them and not spin them. My father taught me that fletching is a promise about where an arrow means to go.

The forty went south with the rider. Nobody in Ashvale would tell me what they were for, and I did not ask, because a fletcher who asks is a fletcher who stops being paid. Only the straight stave with the open point came back to my bench in the autumn, wrapped in oilcloth, with a note tucked under the cord: It flew true. Keep this one for yourself.

I hung it above the door where the light from the yard falls across it at noon. Most days it looks like nothing more than a line drawn in one stroke. On the nights I cannot sleep I take it down, count the feathers, three, the same as always, and think about how far a thing can travel while still pointing exactly where it was made to.
