Crossed arrows on an inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of two arrows crossed through each other sits on the inner wrist, with arrowheads pointing up, right and down. The arrows are drawn in thin black linework with small hatched fletching and solid arrowheads. The photograph is black and white, with a raised hand at the top of the frame and dappled light falling across the background.

Dear Tom,

The apple tree has taken both of them now, the ash shaft and the yew one, so I've stopped trying to pull them out. Mum would have had something to say about that. She'd have had something to say about the bean canes too, which I've let go to seed out of pure spite towards the lettuces. You'll think I'm being sentimental. I am, a bit.

Dad left the butts at the bottom of the garden the summer he stopped walking the hill, and nobody has replaced the straw since. Last Sunday I stood there with his old longbow and the pair of arrows he'd fletched from grey goose feathers, the ones he bought off the man in Lewes, and I tried to loose one the way he taught us, elbow high, eyes on the knot in the fence. It went wide, over the rhubarb, into the neighbour's pond. The second one I held a long time. When it went it flew straight, and it stuck in the bark just above where his had been, and the two shafts crossed over the bench like someone had drawn them there on purpose.

I'm not writing to ask you to come down and pull them out. I'm writing because the frost is due on Thursday and I wanted you to know I'm leaving them in the trunk until the bark closes over, the way he'd have wanted. Bring the good secateurs if you come, and the rest can wait. Love, Jo
