Triangle, asterisk and circle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three small separate symbols sit in a diagonal line on the inner forearm: an open triangle at the top, a small asterisk in the middle and a circle at the bottom. The linework is thin and uniform, in solid black ink with no shading. The plain skin and softly blurred denim behind keep the focus on the small motifs.

The lamp's gone out again so I'm writing by the range, which Mam says is the only sensible place for a letter in February. Your postcard came on Tuesday. London sounds loud. Here the milk still comes at six and Mr Pryce still has his opinions about the Co-op.
I went up to the old quarry on Sunday, the way we used to, and found the marks still on the wall by the stile. Do you remember? The triangle was the stile itself, because the top bar had snapped into a point. The asterisk was where the frost lies longest, the one we called the star because we were nine and thought we were clever. And the circle at the bottom was the well, where we had to stop and drink because you always said the water tasted of pennies.
Someone has painted over the circle with white gloss. Only the circle. I stood there with my hand on the cold stone trying to work out who would bother, and why only that one.
Mam says it was the council's men tidying up for the Coronation fund. I don't think so. I think somebody else still reads the map.
Write back and tell me which way we went after the well. I've got the turns muddled in my head, and I'd rather be wrong with you than right on my own.
Your loving sister, Bet
