Ship's wheel with light rays on a calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a detailed ship's wheel with eight spokes and a central hub, set in front of a shadowed hull or mast. Soft grey shading and sharp highlights give the wood and metal a three-dimensional look, and smudged dark streaks radiate outwards behind the wheel. The design fills the centre of the frame against a blurred dark background.

The dough has been sitting in the cold room since midnight, and by the time you unlock the back door at quarter to four it has begun to sigh against its cloth. Maud is already at the ovens with a red scarf tied over her hair, and she doesn't turn round. She just lifts her chin at the old ship's wheel bolted above the flour bins, the one her grandfather rescued from the coaster Ellen Rose, and says, "Steer us in, then." Every morning the bakery becomes a boat on a black sea, and someone has to hold the course until the sky changes.

You take the wheel in both hands. The spokes are smooth where a hundred palms have worn them, and you turn it a quarter, which is the signal to open the damper on the deck oven. Heat rolls up through the grate. Outside the windows are still ink, but salt and diesel come through the cracks, the same smell that hung over the harbour the morning the Ellen Rose went out past the breakwater. Maud never speaks of that. She only bakes the dense, dark loaves the crew used to eat on board, each scored with a single slash.
At five the first van idles on the cobbles. You load the crates with raw hands and breath smoking in the air. When you climb back in, Maud has pulled up the blind, and the first grey light lies across the floor in long pale bars, fanning out from the wheel's shadow on the wall like sun breaking through cloud. She taps the top loaf with her knuckle. It rings hollow, the way it should.
"Good," she says. "Now we can see the harbour." You turn the wheel one more spoke, and the bakery holds its course.
