Compass rose on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small compass rose sits centred on the upper back of a person with their hair in a bun, photographed from behind. The design uses thin black linework for the eight-pointed star, with a circle, cardinal and intercardinal points marked along its edges. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the simple composition leaves plenty of clear space around the tattoo.

The lift stopped between the seventh and eighth floors with a shudder that Dilys felt in her back teeth, and the bulb above the panel gave one tired flicker and went out. She pressed the alarm, listened to nothing, and pressed it again. Somewhere below, the estate's caretaker was probably eating his tea.

Her grandfather used to say a compass never lies, only the person holding it does. He had carried a brass one through forty years of dockside shifts in Hull, and when his hands shook at the end he gave it to her with the lid already scratched. She tilted it now in the dark, feeling for the needle with her thumb, and found north pulling steadily towards the corner of the car where the handrail met the wall.
She had lived in Block C for eleven years and never once thought of it as a place that could be lost. Yet the lift shaft ran straight through the middle of the building like a spine, and the compass insisted the flats lay east, the car park west, the park beyond the railway south. Dilys worked it out with her fingertip on the scratched brass, one point at a time, the way he had taught her on the pier.
When the doors finally shuddered open at the eighth floor, the corridor light was on and a neighbour's cat sat on the threshold, unbothered. Dilys stepped out, turned once, and set the compass on the windowsill facing the sea she could not see. The needle settled, and she left it there to show whoever came next which way was home.
