Dreamcatcher with feathers on the thigh
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A dreamcatcher with a beaded hoop, radiating web and three hanging feathers is shown on the upper thigh. The linework is dark and fine, with grey shading on the feathers and hoop. Turquoise accents on the feather tips and beads are the only colour in the design.

The net came up on the third haul off Whitby with a gull wound in the mesh and, lodged in the middle of it, a hoop no wider than a dinner plate. Black thread ran from rim to centre in a wheel of knots, and three feathers hung from the bottom, grey as wet slate, their tips the green of sea glass. Dad said it was rubbish off some Hull trawler and wanted it over the side. I put it in my oilskin pocket before he could see.

I hung it in the wheelhouse above the compass, where the screen light caught the beads. Mam thought it was morbid. Skipper Ronnie said it was bad luck to keep anything the sea had handed back, then sat under it every morning anyway and never once touched it. Through the winter we hauled cod and very little else. The quota dropped, the fleet shrank from eleven boats to six, and the harbour office started sending letters with words like "decommissioning" in them.
I took to watching the web at night from the window of our front room, where the quay lamps fell through it onto the carpet in a spread of small bright squares. I counted the spokes the way Nan had counted her rosary, one bead for each thing I was afraid of, and I always lost my place around the same number.
In March the wind died and the sea lay flat as a plate. We went out on the last of the diesel and hauled a net full of nothing but small silver fish, which I threw back one at a time. When the final one slipped away I looked up and the dreamcatcher was turning slowly over the compass, feathers swinging. I unhooked it and carried it home in my pocket, and I hung it on the nail by the back door, where the morning light could find the green tips before anything else did.
