Compass rose with script on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black-ink compass rose sits on the inner upper arm, with a thin-lined eight-point star inside a circular ring and long pointed needles extending to the N, E, S and W marks. A small script word runs down the top edge of the frame beside the arm. The linework is crisp and even with no shading, and the monochrome photograph shows a grey knit sweater sleeve around the lower part of the arm against a plain background.

By the third week of August the windfalls are going soft and sweet under the Bramleys, and your uncle hands you the orchard ledger without looking up from his boots. He says the map is tucked inside the back cover, and that you should not lose it, because the rows have no names on the trees anymore.

The map is pencilled on squared paper, and in its corner sits a compass rose: a small ring, a star drawn eight-pointed and fine as a hair, and four long needles reaching for N, E, S and W. Your grandfather drew it the spring the frost took the plums. He told you once that a rose is only useful if you trust the needle that points the way you are already going, and you thought it was the kind of thing old men say to fill a silence.
So you walk. You count from the stile to the north wall, past the hive that hums like a dropped bell, past the tree with the split trunk, and you tick each row off in the margin. By noon your shirt is stuck to your back, and there are three rows you cannot match to the map, because someone has replanted them and never written it down.
You sit on the wall and turn the ledger over. Beneath the compass, in your grandfather's hand, is a single word you had not noticed before: family, underlined twice, and below it in pencil, the north row with the crooked gate. You stand, brush the dust from your knees, and walk the way the longest needle points, which is the way home.
