Compass rose with watercolour splashes on thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A compass star with ornate, lace-like grey filigree at its centre and black compass letters at the points sits on the outer thigh. Blue, purple and pink watercolour-style splashes spread from the left side of the star, and the same tattoo is repeated across three side-by-side panels against a dark background.

The mapmaker's widow in Hollin Cross kept one thing her husband left that the bailiffs did not want: a brass compass with a star for a face, its needle long since stuck to the north. She set it on the windowsill where the light came through the blue glass, and every evening she turned it over in her hands and said nothing.

Past the last cottage the forest began, and the old people said its trees were drawn on no map. A girl called Ada Penrose went in after her goat one October and came out three days later with ink on her fingers and no goat. She said the path had folded back on itself like wet paper, and that a woman in a grey lace shawl had walked her to the edge carrying a compass the size of a cartwheel, its points lettered in black.

The widow listened without interrupting. Then she fetched her husband's compass and set it on the table between them. The needle swung, slowed, and came to rest pointing not north but at the window, where the sky ran pink at the rim like spilt dye. "He never found the way through," she said. "He only painted the edges so he could sleep."

They went in together the next morning, the goat tied to Ada's wrist and the brass star held flat in the widow's palm. Where the trees opened into a ring of grey filigree, the moss ran blue and violet, and at the centre a path lay plain as a line of ink. Ada found the goat at the spring. The widow found, beneath a stone, a folded map in her husband's hand with a single word written across it: home.
