Interlocking circles on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm carries a black linework tattoo of overlapping circles of different sizes, each with inner rings, small dots and short arcs. The lines are uniform and crisp, with little shading, and the design runs diagonally from the wrist side toward the elbow. The skin sits against a black upholstered chair and a grey floor, which frame the tattoo.

Every night the ringwright of Halse Street sat up with her compass and a lamp that smelled of rendered fat, drawing circles on the backs of spoiled bills. She drew them the way her mother had, one inside another, with a dot at the centre where a thing began and a short arc where it had to turn. The bridge men said the lines kept the river where it belonged. Nobody asked how she knew.

One November the water rose past the third step of St Olave's and did not go down. The aldermen came with lanterns and begged for a charm. She told them a charm was only a map of something already happened. Then she took a fresh sheet and drew a ring the width of the parish, a smaller ring inside it, a dot, a ring through that dot, until the page was crowded with overlapping rounds like ripples where two stones had gone in.

She pinned it to the bridge rail at midnight. The arcs ran where the current wanted to run, and the dots sat where the drains were choked with coins and wedding rings. By dawn the water had slid back under the arches, grumbling, and left a grey crust of silt on every step.

Years later a boy asked why she had never drawn her own name into the design. She tapped the centre dot with her pencil. "That's where I stand," she said. "The rest is only the city, going round."
