Dear Ruth, the boat didn't come on Thursday, so I have had time to walk the whole length of the north shore and count what is left of the planting. Eleven trees. The Sitka the council sent over in 1962 is down to a single leader and a mess of grey needles, and the Scots pines Dad put in along the dyke have gone the way of everything else out here, bent flat by the wind until they look like they're trying to crawl.

The one I wanted to tell you about is the young one by the old fank wall. You remember it: the one you said looked like a child's drawing of a tree. It has started to fill out at the top. Its crown is nearly black now, all needle and shadow, but lower down the branches have gone thin and freckled, as if the wind has been picking at them with a fine comb. Below that there is only a bare stalk, pale and fading into the grass. I thought the ground was simply tired of it. Then I noticed the stalk is still growing, only slower, and the dark part at the top is where it is putting its effort now.

I have not told the others. Mrs Gunn would only say I'm sentimental, and she would be right. But I pushed a stake in beside it this morning so the ewes can't finish what the weather started. If the boat comes on Monday, bring the good twine.
