Pine tree tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A tall conifer tree is tattooed vertically on the inner forearm, with a slender trunk running down to a point near the wrist. The branches are drawn in short, feathered strokes that thicken toward the top, and the crown is shaded with soft grey-black tones. The tattoo is set against a pale skin tone and a dark, blurred background, which keeps the design as the clear focus.

The timetable board at Carrow Halt still shows the 6.14 to Inverlan as running, though the line has been single track since spring, and you are the only one who ever reads it. Every morning you unlock the booking hatch, sweep resin dust off the bench, and look past the footbridge at the ridge where the Scots pines stand in their dark rows.

The line was built to carry timber out, and the pines were the reason for everything. When the last load went down in March, the foreman left a seedling in a tin pot on your windowsill with a note that said only keep it out of the frost. It is no taller than your hand now, a slender stem with a crown of green feathers, and every Friday you measure it against the pencil marks on the frame.

In October an empty wagon came through, and the driver leaned from his cab to ask why you were guarding a tree. You told him it was not a tree yet. He laughed and said everything was a tree before it was a plank, and you did not argue, because he was right about the planks and wrong about the rest.

On the first hard frost you carry the pot down the platform and set it in the gap between the rails where the old freight siding ran, where the sleepers have rotted to nothing and the ground is soft enough to take a thumb. You stand with your hands in your coat until the rails stop humming. Up on the ridge the pines hold their black tiers against the sky, and the young one leans, very slightly, toward the way the trains used to go.
