Three pine trees on an upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three tall conifer trees of differing heights standing side by side, with the tallest in the centre. The trees are filled in solid black with feathered edges and a thin trunk line at the base of each. The image is a close, straight-on photo of the arm, with the background softly out of focus.

The snow had been falling on Hollin Fold for nine days when Agnes Parr took the lantern and the last heel of bread up the top field, because the three pines had started to lean towards the house.

Her grandmother used to say the trees were brothers. The tallest stood in the middle, Ned, and the two shorter ones either side were Tom and little Ash, and they had come down off the moor in the old years to keep the wind from the farm. Agnes had heard it so often she no longer heard it at all, only the crunch of her boots and the hiss of snow sliding off the lantern glass.
When she reached them, the lower branches were bent to the ground under the weight. Ash had already split a limb, and the sound of it had carried all the way down to the byre. Agnes set the lantern on a stone, pulled off her gloves, and beat the snow from every bough she could reach, one arm and then the other, until her shoulders burned and the cold had got into her teeth. She sang the verse about the wind going home, the one her grandmother had made up and never finished.
The wind dropped before dawn. In the grey light the sheep were still alive in the lee of the barn, and the trees stood straight against the sky, each one holding its own weight. Agnes sat on the step with her hands tucked under her arms and understood that the story had been told the wrong way round. The brothers had not been guarding the farm. The farm had been kept going by one lantern and one stubborn girl, and the pines had only been waiting for someone to come up and shake them free.
