A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamplighter of Harrow Dyke had six stars to keep track of, and he kept them the way his mother had taught him, by counting them off on the back of his hand each dusk before he climbed the ladder. Five stayed where they were put. The sixth wandered. Some nights it hung low over the chapel roof, some nights it slid behind the mill chimney as if it had heard its name called, and once in the hard winter it went out altogether, and the whole village came to the green in their coats to watch the sky look wrong.

His daughter Mab was nine that year and not afraid of anything. She found the wandering star lying in the ditch below the sluice gate, cold as a shilling, its small points still sharp. She carried it home in her cupped hands and set it on the kitchen table beside the salt. The lamplighter came in from the cold and stood over it a long while without speaking.

In the morning he walked the six stars back out along a thread of dotted lines he chalked across the sky of the town, one bead to the next, and fixed each one where it belonged. Mab asked him why they could not simply stay put. He told her a star is only as steady as the people who keep looking up at it. She took the chalk from his pocket and drew a seventh line from the last star down to the sluice, so the lost one would always know the way home.
