Constellation tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with teal bobbed hair and red lipstick rests her hand near her chin, showing a small constellation tattoo on her inner forearm. The tattoo is made of tiny black dots joined by fine single lines in a zigzag path running up from the wrist. The background is plain and light, with a black and white striped top and dark dungarees keeping the focus on the ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain has come in sideways off the estuary since before dawn, and by the time the fish sellers haul their tarpaulins tight you have sold only two charts and a pocket compass with a cracked lid. Tobiah Greaves, who sells cheap atlases to tourists at the next stall, calls you the star girl because you keep a shoebox of hand-drawn skies under the counter and will not sell them to anyone who wants them for a wall.

A woman ducks under your awning with a rolled sheet tucked inside her coat, asking whether you can read a route written in dots. The vellum is soft with handling. Someone has joined points of ink with lines as fine as hair, running in a zigzag from the bottom corner up toward a hill. "My grandmother's," she says. "Harbour to the chapel. I can never remember which turn comes after the second bend." You trace it with your thumb: four dots, a sharp drop, three more, then a long climb to a single point left unjoined at the top.

You know what that last dot is before you say it. It is the star at the bend of the old wagon's handle, the one sailors used to set their course by when the harbour lamps went out. You tell her the line was never meant to finish. It was meant to be followed, and the open point is where you stop and look up. She laughs, pays you in damp coins, and leaves the map with you because she says it is too heavy to carry in the wet. That night you pin it above the stove, and with a steady hand you draw one more dot beyond the last, and leave the line between them open.
