Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
This collage shows three close crops of fine line dotted tattoos. The top left photo shows two forearms with small dotted constellation designs ending in star marks, and the top right photo shows a small outlined crescent moon on a wrist. The bottom photo shows a long dotted line with several small star shapes running across the upper chest below the collarbone, with the skin in soft natural light.

The rain had been coming down since before the stalls opened, and by eleven the tarpaulins over the fruit men were sagging like wet sails. Nell kept her back to the gutter and her hands busy with a brass compass, pricking tiny holes into a sheet of blue card with a darning needle. Every hole was a star. She had sold forty of these charts since March, each one a patch of sky someone had asked for, and each paid for in coins that smelled of the cockle stall next door.

The boy came back a little after noon, hood up, a carrier bag clutched against his chest. He did not say his grandfather's name, but he unfolded a receipt with a sketch on the back: three stars and a crescent, joined by a line of dashes. 'He used to point at these from the back step,' he said. 'Can you make them go all the way across?' Nell studied the sketch for a long time. The line ran from a point near the moon and then simply stopped at the edge of the paper, as if the grandfather had run out of room before he ran out of sky.
She worked through the afternoon with the stall lamp lit, rain rattling the canvas above her head. She pricked the dots close, the way the old star charts were printed, and when she reached the edge of the card she kept going on a fresh sheet and taped the two together. The boy watched her hands the whole time. When she finished she held the chart up to the lamp, and the light came through every pinhole at once.
He took it without a word, then stepped to the edge of the stall and tilted it toward the grey sky. Rain ran off the card in thin silver threads. Above the market the clouds had thinned to a single seam, a sliver of moon showed through, and for a moment the holes on the card and the stars overhead lined up into one pattern. He folded the chart carefully into his coat and went off up the hill without looking back.
