Small quotation marks on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a hand holding a white pen, with a small tattoo of two filled quotation marks on the inner wrist. The marks are solid black with soft edges, and the tattoo is the only point of focus against the skin. The background shows a patterned bag strap and a light surface, with the hand filling the upper part of the frame.

Nell had the pen behind her ear when the bargeman's boy came up the towpath at dusk, twisting his cap in both hands. His mother had sent him. The letter had to go to Stourport on the morning boat, and his mother could not write her own name, let alone a letter to a man who had gone for a soldier and not come back.

"Start with Dear Sam," Nell said, and dipped her nib. "Then tell me what you want to say, and I'll put the words down exactly."
He frowned at the lamp. "Exactly?"
"Exactly. Anything you say inside those two little marks goes down as you said it. Nothing added, nothing taken off. That's what they're for. They keep somebody else's voice from turning into mine."
He thought about that for so long that the lock gates groaned behind them and a moorhen complained in the reeds. Then he said, very quietly, "Tell him the cow's in calf again and we're not selling the boat."
Nell wrote it out. Between the marks the words sat neat and black, and outside them her own small hand, saying what the marks had said. When she came to sand the page she found she had closed a sentence twice by mistake, and she left it alone, because the boy had already reached for the letter and was grinning at it as if it were a wage he had finally been paid.
