Coordinate line tattoo across upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with blonde hair is photographed from behind, showing a small tattoo across her upper back. The tattoo is a single line of thin black lettering and numerals with degree and minute marks, reading like geographic coordinates. The ink is solid black on tanned skin, and the sunlit outdoor setting with a palm tree and flowering shrubs sits behind her.

Afterwards, under the yew, she gave him her field book and asked for the position of the old boundary stone on the fell edge. He wrote the figures out with a pencil stub the way she had taught him on their first survey: fifty-four degrees, twelve minutes, eight seconds north, and two degrees, forty-four minutes, nineteen seconds west. The numbers were not the church at all. They were the stone where her father had once left a brass survey cap in the turf, and where Tom had proposed in a sleet storm with a ring kept in a tobacco tin.
The guests drifted down the path towards the tea urn. Dorothy leaned over his shoulder, checked his arithmetic, and said the bearing was out by a few seconds. Tom said he would take the error. She tucked the book into her coat pocket, and when they walked back up the hill to the stone, he found that the cap had lifted in the frost and sat a finger's width proud of the grass, so he pressed it flat with his thumb and called that the first thing they had ever set straight together.
