Flower and band tattoo on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop shows a midriff in a white top and denim shorts, with a tattoo on the outer thigh. The tattoo combines a black outlined flower with leafy shapes and a band of geometric pattern wrapped around the leg. It is rendered in black and grey with solid fills and fine linework on a warm skin tone against a dark grey backdrop.

The frost had got into the glasshouse again, and Ada Pell had to lift every bell jar before the sun cleared the wall. Her father's cuttings were lined up on the potting bench like soldiers waiting for inspection, each one bound at the stem with a strip of grey ribbon he had cut from the old sail bag in the shed. He never threw anything away. He said a good binding was worth more than a good cutting, because a cutting without one only ever wilted.

The mallow in the far corner was the one he had never let her touch. Its leaves were serrated like a fern's and its flowers were black at the throat, fading to a bruised blue at the rim. Nobody in Dorset had sold seed of it in forty years. Ada found the packet in his coat pocket after the funeral, folded small inside a receipt from a Weymouth printer, with a single word written on the front: Keep.

She knelt by the bench and worked the ribbon loose from the last cutting. Beneath it, pressed flat against the stem, was a thin copper wire wound in a repeating zigzag, the same pattern he had stamped on every order invoice for thirty years. It had been his mark, and she had never once asked why. She wound the wire round her own wrist, counted the turns, and went back to the glass.

By noon the frost had lifted, and the mallow had opened a single flower, dark as a thumbprint, turned towards the door as if it had been waiting for someone to come in.
