Small girl power lettering on the wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of the words GIRL POWER in plain black capital lettering sits on the inner forearm near the wrist. The letters are thin and solid with a slightly uneven edge, and the tattoo is set against pale skin with no shading or colour. The person wears ripped high-waisted denim shorts and a brown cardigan, with a soft, neutral background behind them.

The skipper's cough came back in February, so it was me who stood at the wheelhouse of the Margaret Ann at four in the morning while the fleet's lamps wobbled out past the breakwater. Six men were aboard. Five of them had known me since I was a girl carrying their bait tubs, and the sixth, Dodds, had decided before we left harbour that I would not last the week.

He was wrong about the first day, and wrong about the second. On the third, a net snagged on the Carrick ledge and tore the whole port side open. We hauled it back by hand in a force six, and when Dodds swore at me for slowing the pulley, I told him the net did not care whose name was on the licence. Nobody laughed, but nobody swore again either.
The lettering came from Mrs Peel at the harbour office, who kept a stencil kit for the tide board. I asked her for plain black capitals, small and square, and she painted them along the transom beneath the boat's name. GIRL POWER, it read. She said she had seen the phrase on a poster in Hull and thought it daft, but she painted it neatly all the same, and I thought it was a fair thing for a boat to say.
When we came in on the Friday, the men stood on the quay reading it before they had even tied up. Dodds took his cap off and looked at it for a long time. Then he went home without a word, and the next morning he was first on deck, lamp already lit, waiting for me to give the order.
