Fine line script on the side ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A torso photograph showing a thin black script tattoo running horizontally along the side of the ribs, with the end of the phrase cropped at the edge of the frame. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is black on warm skin. The composition is tightly cropped to the midriff, with a black crop top above, light wash denim below and a hand resting on the hip.

Ines had been mending the same tear since the lamps came on over the fish market, her needle going in and out of the twine with the rhythm of someone who had decided not to think about the boat. Her son Tomás was three hours overdue. The harbour master had radioed twice, and both times he had said the same thing: the swell was breaking over the bar and nothing would come in until it eased.

Behind her on the quay stood the other wives and mothers, and a girl with a pram who kept glancing at the radio fixed to the wall of the ice house. Nobody spoke much. Ines had learned long ago that the sea did not care for conversation, and that the most useful thing a woman on the harbour wall could do was keep her hands busy and her face still.
Her mother had written a line on the inside cover of the tide book years before, in faded blue biro, when Ines was a girl learning her knots: paciencia, tanto pasa. Patience, and everything passes. Ines had thought it a silly thing to pin inside a book about tides. Now she read it every time the wind changed, the way other people touched a rosary.
Just after midnight the running lights swung round the breakwater, low and slow, and the girl with the pram began to cry before anyone else had moved. Ines did not stand up. She finished the knot she was tying, bit the twine clean, and only then reached for her coat.
