Coordinates tattoo on the back of a neck

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the back of a neck with dark hair falling across the upper shoulders against a bright background. A small vertical tattoo reads N 40 and W 105 in blocky black characters, with degree marks beside the numbers and a triangle at each end. The ink is solid black with clean, even linework, and the composition is close and centred on the tattoo.

Ada Pell kept the telegraph key at the siding where the line bends under the foothills, and every winter the snow took the wire and she had to walk the ballast with a lamp to find the break. Then a boy came off the mail with a crate of hens and a ticket to nowhere he could name. Tobias Hale had lost his father's watch and his sense of direction in the same week, and he stood on the platform turning a compass that pointed everywhere at once. Ada took it from him, shook it, and handed it back. "It isn't broken," she said. "It's just not sure where you're meant to be standing."

She walked him out past the last post in the blue dusk, and at the marker where the chalk numbers had worn to ghosts she made him stand still with the hens at his feet. The wire hummed. Far off a whistle answered, low and patient, the eastbound finding its way back to the line. Tobias laughed, and then he cried, and then he said he had never been so sure of a place in his life.

Ada went home and wrote the figures in the ledger, under her father's hand, and put the kettle on for two.
