Pink peony tattoo on hip and buttock

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

The collage shows a large pink peony with black outlines, surrounded by green leaves and grey shading, with a second bloom partly visible below it. Close-up detail shows smooth colour fills, bold linework and soft grey shading behind the petals. Pink, green and grey ink dominate the composition, and a peacock feather is visible at the edge of one photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down by the stove and mind the gull on the rail, it has been eyeing my pasty since noon. Now. There was a widow in Saltcombe called Hester Lowe who kept a peony bed behind the net loft, pink ones, the sort the old ship's cook swore could only grow where the salt wind didn't reach. Every spring she cut the first bloom for the chapel and never for herself, because her husband had brought her a single pink flower from a Lisbon market the summer before he went down with the Marguerite. She said it was bad luck to keep a thing that had come home without him.

Her nephew Tobin came back from the navy with a peacock feather tucked in his cap and a notion of trade. He wanted the peonies sent by coach to London, and he wanted her to sign the papers without reading them. She told him flowers don't travel, and he laughed, and she let him laugh. The feather he'd bought in Gibraltar caught the lamplight on the quay every evening, eye after green and blue eye, and the dock men said it looked like a rock pool with the sun in it.

On the first hard frost, Hester walked out with her shears and cut every bloom in the bed, leaves and all, and laid them on the water beyond the harbour wall. The tide carried them out past the breakwater in a slow pink crowd, grey light on the petals, until the fishing boats were only a line of masts. Tobin never sold a single stem. The gull has had my pasty now, so that's your lot for tonight.
