Peony and berry botanical tattoo on a lower leg

Botanical · Calf · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows pink peonies with dark green leaves, clusters of pink and red berries, and an orange tulip-like bloom, with grey fine-line sprigs and seed heads on the left. The linework is bold around the peonies and lighter in the grey botanical sprigs, with soft shading in the petals. The three panels show the same design from different angles, with the colour flowers filling most of the frame.

Dear Nell, the peony by the back wall has finally opened, the one Mum always said would never take in this clay. Eleven blooms, all the pink of cheap sweets, and the leaves gone so dark they look wet even in the dry. I went out at six with my tea and stood there in my dressing gown like a fool, and the blackbird just carried on as if nothing had happened.

I've been sorting her things. There's a biscuit tin in the shed full of paper packets, each one labelled in her square capitals: REDCURRANT, ROSA MUNDI, TULIP (ORANGE, DON'T SHARE). The seed heads have gone papery and rattle like dice when you shake them. I counted forty-two packets before I stopped. Half of them are for things she never got round to planting, which I suppose is the most Mum thing in the world.

I know you think I should have rung before now. You're right. But the berries came on this morning too, a whole fistful of them on the lowest branch, and I wanted to send you some before they went to mush. They won't survive the envelope, so I'm sending the packet instead, the one marked FOR NELL in her hand, which I found tucked under the twine. Sow it in the autumn. Tell me if it comes up pink.

Yours, always, Jo
