Coral rose tattoo on a bare back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo is a loose rose or peony in coral and peach tones, with petals drawn in soft, blended washes and a few faint outlines. It sits on the side of the back, to the right of the spine from the viewer's view, and is small relative to the bare back. The background shows a glittering white gown with crystal trim, dangling earrings and a fine necklace, with the subject photographed from behind.

The proof came back from the printer in Lewes with the coral gone flat, a brick colour where Ada had laid a wash the shade of a shell held up to the light. Mr Tanner had circled the petals in red pencil and written "more life" in the margin, as if life were something a brush could be ordered to produce.

She carried the sheet out to the glasshouse at the back of the Pilling yard, where the cuttings stood in clay pots under the glass. Sun through the panes made every bloom look wet. She dampened a sheet of hot-pressed paper, set a stem of the new rose in a jam jar on the bench, and worked the way her father had taught her, one petal at a time, letting each wash bloom at its edge and stop before it drowned the next.
Three afternoons went by. The paint kept drying darker than it looked wet, and she kept thinning it with water until the paper nearly gave up on her. On the fourth morning a wasp blundered in and settled on the rim of the jar. She let it stay, because it was the only thing in the yard that had come to look.
The painting that went to Lewes had a pale coral heart and a peach edge that seemed to lift off the page. Mr Tanner sent a postcard saying the printer had managed it. The rose went into the catalogue as Pilling's Dawn, and nobody asked why one petal on the lower left had been left almost bare, a small patch of white paper she had decided to keep.
