Small green leaf on a lower leg

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

A small, solid green leaf with a single thin stem line sits on the lower leg above the ankle of a person standing barefoot on a dark wooden deck. The leaf is filled with green ink and the stem is a fine dark line, with no shading. The blurred background and soft natural light keep the focus on the tattoo and the bare feet.

She took a single leaf from the fallen crown, pressed it between two slates of stone and carried it up the one hundred and twelve steps of the tower in her apron pocket. At the top she showed it to her father. He looked at it for a long time, then said a leaf is only a leaf until somebody decides what it is for.

She decided it was a sign. Every evening after that she climbed the stair and held the leaf up to the lens so the lamp shone through its veins, and the fishing boats coming home from the Skerries learned to steer by the green glow at the window's edge. Nobody in the village could say when the custom started. The old ones still say the sea was calmer that year, and that Maud never once let the lamp go out.
